1/03/11 Breathtaking Proposal #3

Taboo

This is actually the proposal that I thought up for one of my best friends. She just doesn’t know about it yet. I hope I don’t ruin the surprise. (It’s fine, I can think of another proposal if that happens.)

I don’t know about you but my friends/family love playing board games.

One of our favorites is Taboo.

If you aren’t familiar with the game; you can read more about it via this link to Hasbro the company that produces the game.

Taboo is a word guessing game. The object of the game is for a player to have his/her partner(s) guess the word on his/her card without using the word itself or five additional words listed on the card.

Well if your family/friends/partner is like mine; you’ve played the game so often that you know what words are in the deck now. So why not make up your own words?

Here’s how I envision it:

  • You let everyone in on the plan, besides the one you want to propose to, of course.
  • You split into teams; you have to be on the same team as your partner.
  • Create a signal to your other team mates to let them know when you switched the cards so that they know they’re not supposed to guess.
  • Play a couple rounds so that your partner doesn’t think anything is going on. (Try to act as normal as possible.)
  • Then when it’s your turn to have your team members guess the words. Use the signal.
    • Examples:
      • scratch your nose with your bicep instead of your hands.
      • Say something unusual but not too unusual that it’ll alarm your partner like “Don’t worry team, we’ll taking them down. *insert cheesy line*”
      • Ask someone on the other team to get you a special “drink” that’s unique… perhaps apple cider or cookies and milk.
      • Etc.
  • Have the other team members look at the sand timer. Flip it but when your partner isn’t looking; have them set it on the side so the time doesn’t go out. (You may need extra time to get all four words.)
  • Start with the first card. (You team mates shouldn’t stay quiet though the entire thing. They should shout out things related but not the actual word. So your partner doesn’t get suspicious.)
    • WILL
      • This thing is used by umm lawyers. If you die, you give things to your family.
      • Hopefully your partner gets it right away and says “WILL.”
    • YOU
      • This person is the only person that can stop forest fires!
      • “YOU!”
    • MARRY
      • “This is an expensive event that couples do before a honeymoon.”
      • “They get gifts and in laws when they do this.”
    • ME
      • Two ways to end this;
      • Finish with the game having them guess the last word is “me” in a not obvious way.
        • “Boy this is tricking… ummm…The abbreviation for MAINE…”  ME.
      • Or finish in an obvious way.”
        • This person is the one I love waking up to in the morning with.
        • This person has the greatest laugh that can erase a day’s worth of stress with just their sweet smile.
        • Until they say… “me?”
  • When they finally guess the last word. Make it seem as if the timer just went off. You’ll start cheering. Woo hoo, four words! High five your team mates.
  • Have the person that is keeping records ask you again what were the words that you got.
  • This is where your friends/family comes behind you but can still be seen by your partner.
  • As you read the words again; this time on your one knee since you’re so exhausted from such a great round.
    • WILL, YOU, MARRY, ME, FILL IN YOUR PARTNER’S NAME
    • While you’re reading the words. Your friends/family will lift up poster boards with the words on them in bold for them to see.
  • Then they’re probably going figure what’s going on and say yes in tears.

NOTE: It would be great to have this on video and have photographs throughout the night.

To make the cards, you can just create your own and tape it onto regular cards so they can see that the backing is a normal card. Or just memorize what you’re going to say so that they don’t notice the cards if you flipped it over by mistake.

You can improvise during your round and decide to skip some words because you accidently said a word on the card so that she doesn’t think the words are related. Don’t forget to use your “ummms and hmms” while trying to guess how to convey to your team the words so it looks like you never saw these words before.

Have fun!
